If you have kids, the reindeer safari Rovaniemi is a great activity for them. My children were talking about how they met ‘Santa Claus reindeer’ for days after the sleigh ride. They were already excited for the reindeer because of Christmas. But when they figured out that you’ll be riding in a sleigh - just like Santa - they freaked out hahaha. Amazing experience for them. And my husband and I loved it too! The reindeer are truly beautiful animals and seemed very well cared for. Friendly also! I’m thrilled I got to pet one.
We had a great time. The animals are very cute, and honestly it’s very fun to just stand there and look at them. The reindeer pulling the sled is just magical though. Driving through the snow, the white animals, the wooden sled…really really picturesque. I also enjoyed speaking to the reindeer herders. Their way of life is so completely different from our customs. Plus, they were all so friendly, very open people. I didn’t want to offend them in any way, but they made me feel totally at ease. As did our guide Gia. Special thanks to her for getting photos of my girlfriend and the reindeer!

The estate houses a reindeer farm, home to several reindeer that live there year-round. Walk up to the fence and gaze at the majestic reindeer. Although they’re strong with huge antlers, stretch out your hands - they’re all very friendly animals! They’re often curious and may come closer to meet you. If you’re lucky, you’ll even be able to feed one!
A REINDEER SLEIGH RIDE
Once you’ve met the Arctic animals, your Reindeer Ride Rovaniemi can really begin! Your guide will help you board an authentic wooden sleigh. It'll be piled high with blankets and pillows to keep you warm. Then they’ll hook up the reindeer, and your 500 m long sleigh ride will start! The reindeer will trot over the snowy trails at a brisk pace, riding past tall evergreen trees. As you ride, lean back and drink in the glistening winter wonderland. Nordic nature is unlike anything else, and this is a unique opportunity to appreciate it. So take all the time you can to gaze at the shimmering white landscape!
LISTEN TO LOCAL REINDEER HERDERS
As part of the Reindeer Ride Rovaniemi, you’ll also speak to traditional reindeer herders. Get off the sleigh, and sit in a kota - a traditional Finnish hut. You’ll be joined by reindeer herders, who will teach you about their way of life. Reindeer herders are traditionally Sami people - the indigenous people of Lapland. In fact, reindeer herding is their most profitable economic activity. There are about 6,700 herders in Finland alone! While the Sami herders speak about their way of living, you’ll be served hot berry juice and biscuits to keep warm.

Do you know the legend of Santa Claus’s Reindeer?
In popular culture, Santa Claus’s reindeer pull his sleigh to deliver gifts to children on the night between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The legend became widely known in 1823 with the publication of the poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas”, commonly attributed to Clement Clarke Moore. The poem introduced eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen.
You may notice that Rudolph is not one of the original eight. He was introduced much later, in 1939, in a storybook created for Montgomery Ward. The famous holiday song that followed made Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer a beloved addition to Santa’s team.
